WHO AM I?

Being born and raised in Africa instilled in me a deep respect and connection to nature and all its wonders. This has extended into curiosity about our own human landscape, learning through neuroscience and other fields of study “how we tick”! Turns out we are actually very similar to each other, have the same set of emotional needs we need to get met in order to be well, and can use our very own resources to get these needs met. Anyway back to me!

 

I am a state registered Occupational and Human Givens Therapist and being the mind detective I am, recently qualified as a Hypnotherapist. I have worked for over 15

years in a wide range of mental health settings within the NHS, including helping to develop forensic secure services for women and older peoples’ day hospital services.

WHAT IS HUMAN GIVENS ALL ABOUT?

We all know that we have physical needs-for food, water, warmth and shelter, but people often don't realise that certain emotional needs are just as crucial for both our mental and physical health. These needs are called “givens” as they are genetically programmed into us at birth, and we experience them as feelings. These include a sense of security-feeling safe, social connection, status-feeling valued, autonomy and control, competence and achievement, and meaning and purpose.

 

Human givens therapists focus on helping clients identify the unmet emotional need or needs that are disturbing them and help them do something about it by activating their natural resources in new ways. To do this they use a variety of proven techniques aimed at problem solving and changing emotional responses.

 

The approach is informed by a wide range of fields including findings from psychology and neurobiology about what people need to function well, and international research studies that have established which psychotherapeutic techniques are most effective.
